How We Use AI in Research

Saturday, November 21, 2026 · check-in 1:00 PM · program 1:30–5:40 PM · Chen 100 & Chen 130, Caltech

Hosted & organized by Caltech C · Supported by AIX (Academia-Industry X)

AI in Academia is a small-group workshop on how we actually use AI in our research. PhD students and postdocs from different fields will share what they use AI for, how they use it, and what has or hasn't worked, and talk with researchers from academia and industry. Whether AI is the subject of your research or one of your tools, you are welcome here. Join us for an afternoon of student talks, posters, and conversations. Dinner afterwards is for speakers and volunteers.

What to submit

A short abstract in English (up to 300 words) with an optional figure. Published work, work under review, and work in progress are all welcome. Beyond results, we'd love to hear the details: what you used, how you used it, how well it worked, and what went wrong along the way. The workshop is non-archival: there are no proceedings, so presenting here does not conflict with submitting elsewhere.

Topics (any field is welcome; these are examples)

  • Using AI to solve research problems: modeling and prediction, data analysis, imaging and signal processing, experiment design and automation

  • Bringing AI into the research workflow: literature review, coding, writing, and agent tools

  • Research on AI methods: large models, vision and multimodal learning, robotics, learning theory, trustworthy AI

  • Your tricks of using AI

Who can submit

PhD students and postdocs at Caltech and other Southern California universities, in any field where AI is part of your work. Each person may submit one abstract as the presenting author and should be able to attend in person on November 21.

Selection

  1. Each abstract is reviewed by 2–3 researchers from different fields.

  2. If we receive many submissions, shortlisted authors will be invited to send a 3-minute video pitch.

  3. Several works will be selected for oral talks (6–10 min + 3 min Q&A); other accepted works will be presented as posters.

Awards

We have prepared over $500 in gift cards; every speaker and poster presenter will receive one.

Key dates (deadlines at 11:59 PM Pacific Time)

  • Sun, Oct 25: Submissions open

  • Sat, Nov 7, Abstract deadline

  • Wed, Nov 11: Decisions and Round 2 invitations

  • Sun, Nov 15: Video pitch deadline (Round 2 only, depends on people registered)

  • Wed, Nov 18: Final program announced

  • Sat, Nov 21: Workshop

Privacy: your information is used only for this event and is not shared with anyone else, unless you opt in to share it with our sponsors. By submitting an abstract, you agree that its title, authors, and abstract may be published on the workshop website and in our posts.

Caltech Chen 100 & Chen 130

AIX(Academia-Industry X)

本次 workshop 不出 proceedings(non-archival),在这里报告不影响之后投到其他会议或期刊。

Workshop
