Object-Native Iceberg Catalogs: Architecture and Design Considerations with Practical Implementation

On-prem deployments of Apache Iceberg have matured to the point where teams can now choose between multiple catalog architectures, from traditional external services like Nessie or Polaris to fully embedded, object-native implementations. Each model carries tradeoffs in manageability and governance.

For many organizations, on-prem architectures continue to offer clear advantages in cost, performance, and control. As these deployments scale, questions emerge around how metadata and data governance interact, how IAM and catalog policies align, and how design choices affect concurrency, latency, and auditability.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the design choices available for on-prem Iceberg deployments and how to match them to their performance, security, and operational needs.

Who Gets In? Securing the Iceberg REST Catalog

IAs Apache Iceberg adoption accelerates, robust authentication and authorization in the REST Catalog are becoming critical. This talk explores Iceberg’s evolving security model, including OAuth2 token exchange for delegated access, traditional authorization flows, and approaches for integrating with enterprise identity providers. We’ll discuss key challenges like multi-tenant authorization and bridging gaps between specification and implementation, giving attendees a clear view of the current state of Iceberg REST Catalog security and how to build a scalable, compliant foundation for future growth.

Ron is a Developer Advocate at CelerData, where he helps bridge the gap between high-performance analytics technology and the data engineering community. Before joining CelerData, Ron worked at Jefferies, where he engineered real-time streaming systems and electronic trading infrastructure for fixed income products. His work focused on ultra-low-latency performance, reliability, and data integrity in capital markets environments. He’s especially interested in modern data architecture. Particularly streaming analytics, lakehouse ecosystems, and how simplicity and performance intersect in developer-centric systems.
