Blue Speeds in Action: A Simple Solution for a Healthier Ocean

​This session will introduce the Blue Speeds concept and explore how modest reductions in vessel speed can deliver simultaneous benefits for climate, marine biodiversity, and shipping efficiency. Participants will learn about the links between vessel speed, underwater noise, whale strike risk, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the rationale behind operating ships at no more than 75% of design speed. The session will also present IFAW's upcoming Blue Speeds in Action study and at-sea trial, highlighting how real-world evidence can support scalable solutions, inform policy development, and accelerate positive change across the maritime sector.
