Tax Release: Art Installation and Public Shredding Event

​On Sunday October 25, ten days after the IRS extended filing deadline, Professor Galen Crantz will lay out her tax returns from 1963-2018 publicly in a one-day installation at Oakland's Local Economy, so that she can see, and share, an accumulation of bureaucratic effort that is personal to her and relatable for us all. She invites the public to join her anytime between 11 am - 4 pm to view the scale of her returns, and to bring your own tax documents (older than 7 years!), either to shred manually onsite, or to be dropped for free in secure bins that will be shredded at the Berkeley Shreds facility. At the end of the day, 56 years of Galen's documents will be similarly released.

​The exhibition sheds light on the amount of collective effort that filing taxes requires, and asks us to think about what uses of our time could be more productive.
