Current state of the art in laboratory-based human monoclonal antibody discovery campaigns
Our next High-Affinity Talks features James Crowe, Director of Vanderbilt Center for Antibody Therapeutics.
Artificial intelligence methods for predicting protein structure are all the rage these days. There is a desire to develop antibody discovery programs in which we just design antibodies on a computer and skip the whole laboratory antibody campaign exercise.
In fact, high-throughput antibody discovery techniques in the laboratory have advanced nearly as rapidly as artificial intelligence techniques. Therefore, currently, it's more effective to conduct a laboratory campaign to find broad and potent neutralizing antibodies for viruses than it is to conduct digital campaigns.
Eventually, these two worlds will converge when enough data is obtained for antiviral antibody variable gene sequences, structures, and antibody antiviral function data. We will survey various projects that illustrate the current state of the art in laboratory-based antibody discovery campaigns.
