About Event

Future The ways of living we might create together - by choice or by necessity.
FractureThe ecological, economic, and social crises already unfolding, and the deeper ruptures that may yet emerge.
Philadelphia The place we call home

To be collapse aware is to live with the sense that something about the way we live is coming to an end. And then to ask the next obvious question head on: If the incrementalist approach of our existing political and economic structures is not up to the task of improving things — climate, society, inequality, injustice — what comes next?

- Rojo Spinks, How I became 'collapse aware'

Event Description:

Future, Fracture, Philadelphia is a local meetup for people in the greater Philadelphia area who are - or are becoming - collapse-aware: from elders concerned about the trajectory to young adults figuring out how to navigate this troubling paradigm and anyone seeking thoughtful, honest dialogue about our shared, uncertain future.

What is collapse-awareness?

Collapse awareness begins with recognizing that many of the challenges shaping our world today are deeply interconnected. Ecological degradation, energy scarcity, economic inequality, geopolitical instability, climate change, and social fragmentation are not isolated problems - they reinforce and intensify one another.

Together, these pressures place growing strain on the ecological and social systems that support our modern industrial civilization.

People who consider themselves collapse-aware believe these stresses are contributing to - and may eventually cause - significant decline in the systems that underpin modern life. Exactly when or how this might unfold is widely debated. Some imagine a gradual decline over the coming century, while others anticipate serious disruptions within the next decade. Most understand change as unfolding through a series of shocks and partial recoveries, rather than a single sudden collapse.

Talking about these possibilities can feel uncomfortable because it challenges many assumptions we hold about societal progress, stability, and our shared future. But engaging with these topics is not simply an exercise in pessimism or doomerism. For many, collapse awareness is about facing reality honestly, allowing ourselves to fully feel and process the grief, anger, and fear that arise when engaging with our predicament so that we can respond to unfolding challenges with greater resilience, clarity, and compassion.

This is not a prepper meetup or a techno-utopian think tank. The vibe of this meetup we're aiming for is one of sometimes referred to as post-doom and deep adaptation: grounded, reflective, compassionate, and focused on what we can do - however small - in response to failing political, ecological, and other related systems.

At this gathering, we will create space to:

  • Speak candidly about the converging crises shaping our world

  • Reflect on the emotional and psychological dimensions of collapse awareness

  • Share perspectives, questions, and experiences

  • Explore practical ways our communities in Philadelphia might adapt, support one another, and build resilience in uncertain times

Above all, this meetup is about connection and collective sense-making. Many people encounter these ideas in isolation. Gathering together allows us to process them collectively and begin imagining what meaningful response might look like at the human and local scale.

Parents/caregivers and their children are welcome to attend.

About Future, Fracture, Philadelphia:

Future, Fracture, Philadelphia (FFP) is an experimental, volunteer-stewarded initiative created by Quinn McHugh, a resident of West Philly. After becoming collapse-aware in 2025, Quinn spent several difficult months grappling with the collective grief that followed. This meetup is an experiment aiming to create the local gathering Quinn wished he had - one grounded in candid, compassionate conversation about the realities of collapse and how we might grapple with and respond to them as individuals, as a community, and as a city.

If you're interested in helping Quinn host this meetup or host a related activity or event of your own, please reach out: [email protected]
