About Event

Join us for a panel discussion and to hear from speakers from Climate Defenders Australia and Australian Climate Accountability Project on the increased use of threats and intimidation tactics being deployed by fossil fuel giants against people and groups advocating for environmental and climate action.

We are increasingly seeing powerful fossil fuel corporations using these kinds of tactics against people and organisations embedded in, or servicing, the climate and environment movement. One tactic that we are increasingly seeing is the 'SLAPP' lawsuit – which stands for ‘strategic litigation against public participation’. 'SLAPPs' are designed to silence and intimidate those working towards climate accountability and solutions. A recent and notorious example of SLAPP is the case of Energy Transfer (which owns the Dakota Access Pipeline) v Greenpeace, in which Greenpeace was recently ordered to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to the fossil fuel company for its involvement in protests against the DAP.

This event will be especially enlightening for businesses and experts who work closely with environmental advocacy organisations who may become the target of such threats and tactics. It will help climate-focused organisations and businesses to understand the risks and to build resilience in the face of threats.
