​Build Graphical Apps For Your Terminal with React Router — Ryan X. Charles (Astrohacker)

​In the age of AI agents, terminals are uniquely well suited to the streaming text in and streaming text out paradigm of large language models. The only problem with terminals are that they are limited to text-only interfaces. But what if there were a way to create graphical user interfaces for terminals?

​By leveraging web technologies, we can build native apps that run inside of a webview overlay. TermSurf is a new terminal with the "TermSurf Protocol" that makes it possible for terminal-based apps to open webviews, so their interfaces can be entirely graphical using familiar web technologies like React Router. In this presentation, we explain how to create such apps using React Router, and demonstrate several examples including a calculator, chat app, a password manager, and, of course, a web browser.

​TermSurf is a fork of Ghostty, Chromium, and Nushell, and is designed in the form of a cross-platform protocol that could be adopted by other terminals, making it possible to build cross-platform GUI apps for terminals; perhaps they could be called "GTUIs". All demonstration apps are created with React Router, and there may even be a proof-of-concept of a Remix 3.0 GTUI.
