Talk: In conversation with Jonelle Twum from Black Archives Sweden
Black Archives Sweden is a contemporary archive centred on the experiences and narratives of Afro-Swedes and Black people in Sweden. It approaches the archive as a site of possibility, holding space for other imaginations, realities, histories and conditions for the future. In this conversation, Abbas Sbeity speaks with Jonelle Twum, founder and artistic director of Black Archives Sweden, about her work, her archiving methods, and the relationship between the archive and her artistic practice. They discuss how she works between collecting, reading and activating the archive through cultural production.
About the speaker:
Jonelle Twum (she/they) is an artist and filmmaker whose practice spans film, installation, sound, text and theory. Her work engages themes of migration, memory, materiality, collectivity, desire and the body, often through the lens of Black feminist thought and the attentive rhythms of the everyday. Twum has shown work at the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2025), Ställbergs Gruva (2025), Krognoshuset (2025), Botkyrka Konsthall (2024), Carnegie Museum of Art (2024) and Malmö Konsthall (2023). She is the founder and artistic director of Black Archives Sweden, a contemporary archive with a starting point in Afro-Swedish experiences.
