Women Build Oakland: From Idea to App in One Day
Have an idea for an app, website, or digital tool—but not sure how to build it?
Women Build Oakland is a free, beginner-friendly AI buildathon designed to help women turn ideas into working digital products in just one day.
Presented by CoCo Noir Labs, this hands-on event will bring together 30 women founders, professionals, creatives, students, small-business owners, community leaders, and aspiring technology builders.
No previous coding experience is required.
Participants will join small teams of two to four women and work together to build one shared app, website, or digital tool that addresses a real business or community challenge. You can contribute through business strategy, research, project management, design, marketing, storytelling, prompting, testing, coding, or presenting.
What to Expect
During the event, participants will:
Learn the basics of AI-powered vibe coding
See how an idea can become a working digital product
Meet women with different professional and creative skills
Form a team around a shared idea or challenge
Build a functional prototype with support from mentors
Present the completed project to a panel of judges
Compete for prizes and special recognition
Teams may build solutions related to:
Women’s economic opportunity and entrepreneurship
Small-business and hospitality innovation
Health, wellness, caregiving, and safety
Workforce development and education
Community and public services
Oakland’s culture and creative economy
Who Should Apply
This event is for women and women-identifying adults who are curious about AI, technology, entrepreneurship, or solving meaningful problems.
You may be a:
First-time AI builder
Founder or small-business owner
Working professional or executive
Creative or community leader
Student or career changer
Designer, product manager, or developer
Beginners are encouraged to apply. You do not need to arrive with an idea or have technical experience. You only need to be ready to learn, collaborate, and build.

Participation is free
Space is limited to 30 builders
Registration is application-based
Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance
Accepted participants must be available for the full program from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Participants should bring a laptop and charger
Lunch, refreshments, mentorship, and event materials will be provided
Come with an idea or simply come ready to collaborate. By the end of the day, you will have helped create a real digital product and gained the confidence to continue building with AI.
