About Event

With non-consensual image-based abuse legislation being released in more and more jurisdictions, the pressure is on platforms to make their guidelines and content-takedown enforcement better.

But what happens when your experience of image-based abuse isn’t seen as that?

This is the central question behind Chayn’s project to build a cultural map of what intimate means (in the context of image-based abuse) in different communities across the world. The research explores how locally specific definitions of intimacy shape people’s understanding and experiences of image-based abuse, and how this intersects with cultural and social context. The first stop in this global cultural map is Pakistan.

Through a real-world case study grounded in 60+ interviews with survivors in Pakistan and across the Pakistani diaspora, this session examines how nudity-based guidelines don’t work and how the consequences can be deadly.

We know that the work of making the web and digital platforms safer for everyone, especially women and marginalised genders is critically important but also complex. There’s so much to learn, unlearn and experiment together and we want to invite you all to be partners with us in this learning journey. We would share our findings before the launch, and soundboard our recommendations. This is to ensure these recommendations are relevant and actionable for companies, and to hear your perspective on what you think should be prioritised.
