How do we move from understanding complex challenges to imagining – and working towards – fundamentally different futures?
The Doughnut* model is a framework for understanding what it means for humanity to thrive within the limits of our planet. Its visual model combines a social foundation – the essentials everyone should have access to – with an ecological ceiling that we should not overshoot.
In this interactive training, we combine the Doughnut's systemic lens with the Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP) approach developed within the RESIST project. Rather than learning the framework through a lecture, we will test it in practice.
Working in small groups, participants will choose a shared challenge and experiment with:
seeing the system → imagining a desirable future → working backwards from that future → shaping a mission for change.
The focus is not on creating a perfect mission or solution, but on training the muscles of systemic thinking, future visioning and mission-oriented innovation.

*Doughnut model is based on the UN SDGs’ social goals and environmental science. It was developed by a British economist, Kate Raworth, at Oxford. It is based on her groundbreaking book “Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist”. Inspired by this new compass for the 21st century, Doughnut Economics Action Lab – DEAL – has been growing as a global movement since 2020, offering applied research, counselling, grassroots initiatives, methodological development and breaking the silos between governments, businesses, academia and communities.
