About Event

What makes AI safety research actually useful—and how do you choose work that matters?

Join BASIS for Doing AI safety research that actually matters, a talk with Stephen “Cas” Casper, Assistant Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Cas will discuss how to choose research topics, avoid common pitfalls, and improve your research process...with unexpected lessons from UPS delivery drivers, Tina Fey, and a viral dance video about fruit!

Whether you’re choosing your first project or rethinking an existing one, come ready to question what makes research impactful.

October 8
📍 Talk: 3–4 PM · MLK Stephens Lounge

Small-group office hours: 2–3 PM · VLSB Lawn

Before the talk, Cas will meet with 10–15 students for a discussion about their research questions, ideas, and uncertainties. Space is limited, so please complete a short application if you’d like to join. No prior research experience is required—we’re looking for thoughtful questions and a willingness to engage with others’ ideas.

Apply for office hours by Monday, October 5th: Open Google Form

We’ll confirm places by Tuesday, October 6th. Your talk RSVP does not reserve an office-hours spot.
