Description

Space communications are the invisible backbone of the entire industry, and most people never think about them until they break. A solar flare, a jammed frequency, a severed ground link, or a single point of failure in a relay network can blind a mission in an instant.

The Small Steps & Giant Leaps community is gathering to look hard at the state of our communications networks—what's holding up, what's fragile, and what has to change before we're running crewed missions across the solar system.

Expect substantive conversations on:

The current architecture—how we actually reach spacecraft today, from the Deep Space Network to commercial relay constellations
Single points of failure and where our networks are dangerously thin
Laser and optical communications and the leap in bandwidth they promise
Jamming, interference, and security as space becomes contested
The light-lag problem and autonomous systems for Mars-distance operations
Where we have to be to support a permanent human presence beyond Earth

We're building a civilization that will stretch across worlds. It won't hold together if we can't keep it connected.
