Is Electrification the Key to Energy Security?
Until recently, energy security meant only one thing — the need to secure the supply of fossil fuel. This decade, things have changed: new technologies for the generation, storage and use of clean electricity have begun to scale massively, just as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz exposed the fragility of fossil fuel supply chains — and as the costs of climate change have started to be felt worldwide. But is a deeply electrified energy system inherently more secure, as its proponents claim, or are we just swapping one set of risks for another? The discussion will explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of a clean electrified system, and the implications for China, the US, Europe and “Most of World.”
