Recalculating route... opening reception
Navigation technologies, geospatial platforms, and mapping tools have long promised to make place more accessible, more searchable, more shareable, and more known. But that legibility comes at a cost. The closer a place gets to being externally documentable, traced, and surveilled, the further it moves from the people nearest to it.
Recalculating Route... gathers work that reimagines that relationship, and use forms of knowing that require presence, return, and a sense of "you had to be there". These artists aren’t concerned about what it means to find something, but rather, what meaning is made by already being somewhere.
This new media show features work by Spencer Chang, Elizabeth Kezia Widjaja, Ashton Reeder, April Soetarman, Owen Trueblood, and Queenie Wu, many of which are activated beyond the gallery space. You are encouraged to come back again, and encounter a different version of the work on each visit.
