Se(w)cular Stitches: Kantha Connections Workshop
Join our intimate stitching circle, Kantha Connections, to explore the interconnections between India’s and Thailand’s resistance movements through stitching. This 2 hour session invites artists, activists, storytellers and anyone interested to learn basic Kantha stitching - a traditional South Asian embroidery technique reborn as a powerful medium of feminist resistance. Folks in Bangladesh and parts of India have long used Kantha to voice stories of survival, agency and collective healing amid colonial oppression and social struggles. Through the art of Kantha embroidery, we invite you to transform your old fabrics into powerful symbols of shared resistance and solidarity... connecting our pasts as we imagine a shared future in the continent.
Materials: Please bring your chosen stitching materials and any old/new fabrics that you would like to stitch together. You are also welcome to bring fabrics that hold meaning for you or your community. Some needles, threads and embroidery hoops will be available.
About the facilitator: Rubina / Singhleton is a textile artivist from New Delhi, India who uses textile art for resistance. She is also the founder of Rafunaama, an initiative that supports and promotes textile artivists across South Asia.
