Wine & Deep Listening: Jazz Appreciation 101
Learn to hear the music... with a live band and a glass in hand!
Ever sat through a jazz set and wondered why the songs run so long, what the bass player is actually doing, or how everyone else seems to know exactly when to applaud? Do you feel that jazz clubs are intimidating? This night is for you.
Led by Dr. Jeremy George, Director of Jazz Studies at Huston-Tillotson University, the evening will be a relaxed, accessible, and educational concert that demystifies jazz. No musical background required. Just bring your curiosity and open ears!
Here's how the evening unfolds:
🍷 Arrive & mingle: Purchase a glass of your favorite beverage at the ZACH bar, settle in, mix and mingle.
🎷 Guided live listening: Our facilitators lead you through the building blocks of jazz with a live band on stage. We'll break down the roles of each instrument, demystify improvisation, and teach your ears what you can listen for.
🎶 Explore the flavors: From the swing era to bebop, Latin jazz and beyond, you’ll quickly find out the styles that resonate with you and the history and culture behind this music.
