Inside Blue Hill Observatory: Exploring Weather in Real Time
Join Amanda Joly, Deputy Chief Weather Observer, for a behind-the-scenes look at how weather is observed, recorded, and interpreted in real time at Blue Hill Observatory.
This session explores how daily observations are made, how instruments are used and maintained, and how human expertise plays a critical role alongside modern technology. From tracking changing conditions to maintaining a 140+ year continuous climate record, Amanda will walk through what it means to observe weather as it happens.
From the summit, take in sweeping views of the Boston skyline—among the best vantage points in the region—and see how geography, elevation, and exposure shape the data we collect.
Visitors are also welcome to explore the Observatory at their own pace—open from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Come for the session or drop in anytime to experience this living laboratory of weather and climate science.
