How We Build Power - Metacrisis Salon #12
Imagining a better world is the easy part. Building the power to actually bring that world to life is the work.
Salon #11 asked what we might want to build to replace a dying system - while Salon #12 asks us: how do the powerless actually win?
Stephanie Luce — professor of labor studies at CUNY and co-author of Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World — has spent decades on exactly that question: how underdogs, facing far stronger opponents, sometimes win anyway. From living-wage campaigns to the Fight for $15 to Occupy Wall Street, she's traced what separates movements that win from movements that just feel righteous. Written with longtime organizer Deepak Bhargava and drawn from the "Power and Strategy" course they teach at CUNY, Practical Radicals sits in the lineage of Alinsky's Rules for Radicals and Sun Tzu's Art of War — mapping six sources of power and seven concrete strategies movements have used to win, from base-building and disruption to narrative shift and electoral change. The Guardian described it as taking inspiration from movements that won to identify the tactics that actually pay off.
Not protest for its own sake. Not being loud. Not even being right.
Power — built deliberately, by people who decided to learn how. Because a vision of ecocivilization doesn't arrive on its own. Someone has to organize the force to make it real.
