With optional private lessons on October 10 Art Revel Gallery | Boise, Idaho

Just in time for Halloween and LAIKA’s upcoming feature Wildwood, join professional animator and filmmaker Lars C. Larsen for an immersive, hands-on introduction to stop-motion puppet design, building, and animation.

Lars has worked behind the scenes on some of the most beloved stop-motion films of the past two decades, including Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Coraline, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link, The Shivering Truth, The Tiny Chef Show, and more. He most recently worked on LAIKA’s Wildwood.

TWO-PART WORKSHOP

Wednesday, October 8 | 5:30–8:30 PM
Intro to Stop Motion + Puppet Design & Building

Learn the fundamentals of stop-motion animation while designing and building your own wire-armature puppet.

Thursday, October 9 | 5:30–8:30 PM
Finish + Animate Your Puppet — “Puppet Dance Party!”

Finish your puppet and bring it to life. Lars will introduce you to the fundamentals of stop-motion shooting and animation as you create your own moving scene.

All materials will be provided, including materials to build a basic wire-armature puppet. Lars will also bring a basic stop-motion shooting stage.

$80 per seat | 30 seats maximum

All ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE SESSIONS

Friday, October 10 | 1:00–4:00 PM

Want more one-on-one time with Lars? Book a private or semi-private one-hour session to dive deeper into puppet building, animation, or your own creative projects.

$75 per hour
Book for 1–4 people per session.

ABOUT LARS C. LARSEN

Lars C. Larsen has built a diverse career in film, with experience spanning live action, animation, theatre, and experimental filmmaking.

He served as Stop Motion Rigging Supervisor on Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning Pinocchio and has worked on Coraline, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link, The Shivering Truth, Buddy the Elf, In the Know, and The Tiny Chef Show, among others.

His live-action credits include Portlandia, Leverage, and The Hunted. His experimental films have screened at film festivals throughout the country, and he has taught animation workshops through organizations including the Portland Art Museum, Bend Film Festival, Boise State University, One Stone, and others.

Whether you’re curious about stop motion, obsessed with puppets, interested in filmmaking, or simply want to make something strange and wonderful this Halloween season, come build a puppet and make it move.
