Who we are
Diagram Chasing is an independent data publication based in Bangalore. Our goal is to take interesting, complex issues, like elections, climate, economics, and bureaucracy, and make them undeniably cool through visual storytelling and open-source tools built for India.
What is this event?
When we published the Portraits of Population story and archive, it found its way into some of our favorite data corners of the internet, like the FT, The Economist's Off the Charts newsletter, FlowingData, and more.
But as much as we love seeing the final project out in the wild, we are just as obsessed with the process of making it. We are hosting our first-ever offline event to show you how a project like this comes together from scratch. How do we go from an idea to a visual, interactive essay? Come find out!
Over the course of four hours, we’ll go through:
Research: How do we arrive at a topic? Where and how do we search for government documents? We will walk you through our workflow and show you how we piece together this kind of history to answer the questions we start with.
Design and Development: What does it take to build the archive? We will break down the technical side of the project. You will hear about our design choices, the writing process, and the development decisions that go into making the final interactive site.
Datajam: And finally, after enough yapping, we will hand over some census data to you; time to create your own visualizations! Build them on your laptop or draw them by hand, drawing inspiration from the original vintage census graphics.
We will talk about the census, research, design, coding, and everything in between.
We do not expect you to have any prior technical knowledge. Whether you are a designer, a developer, or just someone who loves a good chart, you are welcome here.

Cost: Rs. 550 (35 seats). Your ticket helps us cover the venue costs and fund our next project!
