Learning Session on Climate Attribution Science and Legal Accountability for Judicial Actors
This learning session introduces legal practitioners, law professors, and students to the rapidly developing field of climate attribution science and its relevance to legal responsibility. The program will feature Mr. Emmett Connaire, Senior Analyst at InfluenceMap and lead researcher of the Carbon Majors database, as well as speakers who will discuss the findings of the National Inquiry on Climate Change (NICC), the Odette climate justice case filed in the courts of England and Wales, and the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment.
The session aims to strengthen climate literacy within the legal profession by explaining how attribution science links greenhouse gas emissions to climate impacts and how this evidence is increasingly used in litigation, regulatory processes, and public interest cases. Participants will gain an understanding of the distinction between attribution and legal causation, the implications of recent international developments such as the ICJ advisory opinion, and the potential applications of attribution evidence in the Philippine context.
This event is organized by the Environmental Law and Justice Circle (ELJC) and the Alliance of Youth, Organizations, and Students (AYOS).
