Morning Sessions: Maker, Platform, Institution
‘My work is my vocabulary,’ Atang Tshikare said. Made by hand and drawing on Tswana heritage, Southern African landscape and his father’s graphic storytelling, Atang’s work now sits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has been commissioned by the likes of Dior, Adidas and many more. Kobe Darko of Sun Stories works between Accra and London with Ghanaian makers whose vocabularies have been handed down over generations, commissioning, nurturing and placing their work in front of international audiences. In the first of our Morning Sessions, Kobe and Atang are joined by House and Leisure contributing art editor and Zeitz MOCAA curator, Dr Phokeng Setai. Together they represent the maker, the platform and the institution, and come together to explore how a visual language is learnt, how it’s made personal and how it’s carried into objects that travel well beyond where they began, and what happens to it at each stage along the way.
