About Event

Let's discuss the movie "WALL-E": Is it foreshadowing the future of living with AI?

Here is how it works:

  • [Optional] Prior to the event: Watch the movie WALL-E: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910970/

    • If you don't have time for the full movie, here is a 30-min recap (YouTube link does not work for luma mobile apps, try Luma web version):

  • During the event:

    • 3pm-3:30pm: meet outside of Open Road Rosslyn (near Rosslyn Metro exit) for group introduction.

    • 3:30pm - 5pm: Walk Around Theodore Roosevelt Island

      • Walking Route Link: https://scenic-walk.com/#/LhfjAWMm During the walk, the organizer will live broadcast current location, so that people who arrive late can catch up).

Discussion Questions:

  1. We distinguish between "higher pleasures" that require effort and "lower pleasures" that offer instant gratification. How can we design AI to encourage active human engagement rather than just passive consumption?

  2. The Singularity represents a point where AI intelligence surpasses our own ability to comprehend or predict it. How do we maintain a sense of agency as we create systems that may soon outthink us?

  3. AI systems often act as neutral executors of the specific goals and values set by their creators. How can we ensure that the objectives we program into AI prioritize human well-being over simple corporate profit?

Community Ground Rules

To provide an enjoyable experience for fellow participants, here are three ground rules during discussion events:

  1. Step up and step back. (If you feel that you’ve been talking too much, step back to listen more. If you feel that you’ve been relatively quiet, step up to share your perspective or ask a question)

  2. Listen to understand, not to respond.

  3. Be open-minded and value differences.
