📋 Culturally Respectful Powwow Etiquette Guide
Welcome to our Cultural Expedition. To ensure our presence supports and respects the Sovereign Indigenous Nations hosting us, all participants must strictly adhere to the following rules of cultural etiquette:
1. Vocabulary: Terminology Matters
Regalia, NOT "Costumes": The outfits worn by dancers are deeply sacred. They are often family heirlooms, handmade over months or years, incorporating eagle feathers, beadwork, and ancestral symbols. Never refer to them as "costumes."
Regalia, NOT "Dress-up": Do not wear face paint, fake headdresses, or imitation native jewelry. It is highly offensive.
2. Physical & Boundaries
DO NOT TOUCH the Regalia: Never touch a dancer’s clothing, feathers, jewelry, or hair without explicit permission. Many items are blessed and hold spiritual weight.
If a Feather Falls, Stand Back: An eagle feather falling to the ground is a solemn moment representing a fallen warrior. If you see a feather fall, do not pick it up. Notify a tribal elder or staff member immediately. The entire arena will pause for a sacred retrieving ceremony.
Keep Your Distance from the Drum: The drum is the "heartbeat of Mother Earth." Never approach, touch, or attempt to play the big drums without a direct invitation from the drum group leader.
3. Photography & Media Constraints
Ask Before You Shoot: Always ask a tribal member for permission before taking a close-up photo or video of them or their children.
Respect "No-Photo" Announcements: The Emcee (Master of Ceremonies) will explicitly state when photography and filming are strictly forbidden (e.g., during the Sacred Ground Blessing, Honor Songs, or Prayer Ceremonies). Put your phones away instantly during these times.
Grand Entry Etiquette: During the Grand Entry (opening parade), you are required to stand and remove your hats out of respect for the flags and veterans. You may take photos only if the Emcee explicitly states it is allowed.
4. Arena & Seating Logistics
The Circle is Sacred: The central grassy or dirt area is the Dance Arena (the Circle). It is a blessed space. Never walk across the circle unless you are a dancer or invited during an "All Tribes" dance.
Respect Reserved Benches: The seating closest to the arena circle is strictly reserved for dancers, elders, and singers. Do not sit on any chairs covered with blankets or personal items—these are reserved spots. Look for designated "Visitor Seating" or bring your own lawn chairs.
5. Strict Zero-Tolerance Policies
100% Drug and Alcohol-Free: Powwows are strictly sober spaces. Possession or consumption of alcohol, cannabis, or illegal substances anywhere on the festival grounds (including parking lots) will result in immediate expulsion from the event and our NGO group.
Modest Dress Code: Out of respect for the elders and children, avoid revealing clothing. Wear respectful, casual attire (no short shorts, low-cut tops, or offensive graphics).

Once your participation is confirmed by our team, we will reach out to discuss all logistics and final budget details with you directly. To keep these journeys accessible, all actual trip expenses will be divided equally among the team members.
