Batik - Sunflowers and Seedheads

​A creative batik workshop exploring sunflowers and seed heads using traditional wax-resist techniques with tjantings, brushes and dyes.

​Batik is an ancient textile technique originating in Indonesia, and its use has since spread to many other countries, each bringing a different cultural influence to the choice of images and outcomes.

​Traditionally, pattern is applied onto cloth using molten wax with fine brushes or tools called tjantings, copper vessels with a small spout that allows the wax to flow and create a fluid line. Coloured dyes are then applied to the fabric.

​ABOUT THE WORKSHOP In this batik workshop, we will be exploring the beautiful shapes of sunflowers and seed heads on both paper and fabric.

​You will begin by creating a range of smaller experimental samples and unique outcomes on different papers. This will allow you to explore the process and build confidence with the materials before developing a larger final piece. You will also have the opportunity to work on fabric, with pieces that can later be embellished with hand or machine embroidery at home.

​YOUR TUTOR
The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler of Blooming Designs. As a successful textile designer, Alison Butler has also used this process on both fabric and paper to create highly original and decorative textile designs for the fashion industry.

​THE VENUE The workshop will be held in a C18th Long Barn on our working farm in the Meon Valley, an inspirational building set within the beautiful South Downs National Park.

​WHO IS IT FOR? This workshop is suitable for a range of creative abilities, from complete beginners to those looking to develop and extend their batik skills.
