Understanding & Applying Compassion (Nov 14)
Understanding and Applying Compassion: The Three Steps to Thoughtful Action
This 30-minute session is designed to introduce the concept of compassion and provide a practical framework for applying it in everyday life. An act of compassion is defined as doing something that helps someone feel better. The initial, crucial step to being truly compassionate is to recognize when someone or something else is hurting.
To guide us in effectively applying compassion, this session integrates The Three Steps to Thoughtful Action:
AWARENESS: We will explore how to enhance our ability to notice what is happening both inside ourselves and in our surroundings, tuning into opportunities where compassion is needed.
CONSIDERATION: This step involves reflecting on a situation we've noticed. We will consider if we can, if we want to, and if we have the necessary resources—such as time and energy—to act compassionately.
ACTION: If we decide to move forward after careful consideration, we will complete the compassionate action intended to help someone feel better.
Through sharing experiences, we will discover that humans are naturally adept at both giving and receiving compassion. We will highlight how showing compassion not only makes others feel good but also generates positive feelings within ourselves. Ultimately, this session emphasizes that being compassionate creates more compassion in the world without diminishing our own capacity to care, much like a single lit candle can light others without losing its own flame.
