The Anderson Collection
August 27 at 11:00 AM — Abstract Art at Stanford
We’ll meet at Stanford’s Anderson Collection, next to the Cantor Arts Center, to explore modern and contemporary abstract art.
During this session, instead of trying to immediately “understand” abstraction, we’ll slow down and look more closely: What happens with color, form, scale, our bodies, our attention, and our personal associations?
We’ll focus on works by Jackson Pollock and Joan Mitchell — two major figures of American Abstract Expressionism — and use them as a starting point to talk about the different experiences of men and women within the history of abstract art. Everything I love to talk about.
We’ll explore one artwork together using the VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) method — observing, sharing what we notice, and building meaning through conversation.
A relaxed, thoughtful encounter with art that doesn’t always explain itself in words, but can communicate powerfully through our senses and emotions.
The session will be held in English.
Museum admission is free.
