What if the lost footage of a nation’s liberation could change the way we understand world history?

Join us in Taipei for a special screening of THE EYES OF GHANA, a powerful feature documentary uncovering a remarkable chapter of Ghanaian and African history that has remained largely unseen for decades.

Directed by two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, with executive producers Barack and Michelle Obama and producer IShowSpeed, this documentary follows 93-year-old Chris Hesse, the personal cinematographer to Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In 1966, as a CIA-backed coup removed Nkrumah from power, footage documenting a decade of Ghana’s political transformation and liberation was believed to have been destroyed. But the story did not end there.

For decades, Hesse preserved a remarkable archive of more than 1,300 films capturing the birth of African independence during the 1950s and 1960s. Now, racing against blindness and time, he embarks on a mission to rescue and repatriate this extraordinary collection before it is lost forever.

These rediscovered films offer more than a window into Ghana’s past. They challenge us to reconsider whose stories are preserved, whose histories are told, and how the African liberation movement shaped the world we live in today.

More Than a Film

THE EYES OF GHANA is an invitation to witness history, honor the people who fought for independence, and recognize the importance of preserving cultural memory for future generations.

For Ghanaian and African diaspora communities, this story carries a particularly meaningful connection to heritage, identity, and the enduring legacy of liberation. For all audiences, it offers an opportunity to discover a remarkable historical archive and reflect on the power of film to recover stories that might otherwise disappear.

Whether you are passionate about African history, documentary filmmaking, cultural heritage, or the stories that shape our understanding of the world, we invite you to experience this extraordinary film on the big screen.
