Elite Capture by Michael Hamilton
This workshop on Elite Capture by Michael Hamilton will introduce participants to key concepts from Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò’s book, in order to examine how powerful elites co-opt progressive movements and resources meant to serve the marginalised.
We'll be exploring three core questions. First, what is elite capture, and how does it concentrate resources, influence, and decision-making in ways that end up serving the few rather than the many?
Second, what does this mean specifically for Black communities and organisations - how does it distort priorities, undermine grassroots leadership, and shape the uneven relationships between Black-led organisations and funders?
And third, what does it look like for Black professionals inside institutions to respond with integrity - protecting themselves while genuinely supporting the communities and organisations they're there to serve?
As the report reminds us, “The work is not a finished model, but a way of being in the work” (p.216).
