About Event

As soon as one slam is over, we begin again. We have an endless supply of stories to tell.

The slam coming up on October 17th is our nod to National Coming Out Day which falls on October 11th every year. Some of us have been observing (and hopefully celebrating) our coming out for a very long time. Yes, I’m including myself in the aforementioned “some of us,” because, me too, a very, very long time ago.

It’s not always straightforward, it’s not always pleasant. Sometimes, it’s downright painful, depending on the families we’ve been born into, their religious beliefs, the political climate during the era of our emergence.

When there’s hatred in the air, we need each other and our allies more than ever.

Things aren’t so great right now for a lot of us. The last thing we need is to feel alone and unseen. And the point of the Wham! Bam! project is to create community, support, and a safe space to be ourselves.

We welcome everyone to come celebrate with us. The gay, lesbian, queer, bisexual, homosexual (does anyone use that word anymore to describe themselves?), the butches, the femmes, the dykes, the trans, nonbinary, intersex, ace, aro, nancies, nellies, inverts, drag kings and queens, sissies, fags, fairies, and on and on and on.

So many nicknames, so little time. Some way to track our history, huh?

Maybe we can make up some new nicknames together. We’re queerly creative.

And STRAIGHT PEOPLE?

We want you to come cheer for us. Yes, all of you out there! Join us. This is NOT a “members only” event. None of our slams are. It is not a time to stay away.

One of thing I’m sure of…When queer folks get together, a wonderful occasion ensues. Drama, magic, musicals (especially if I’m in the room), glitter, boas, snark. So, don’t miss out. Come play with us.

No nasty will be tolerated at this event.

Except for the fun kind. And you know what I’m talking about.

Featured Storytellers all write on the Substack platform:

Christine Destrempes, Deb Sinness, Tess McCarthy, Hana Leyland, James Dale, Jazmine Becerra Green, Raziela Orlinat, TerriSunflower, and Tracy Mayne.
