Artist Talk and Listening Session
Fridman Gallery is honored to present Mirrored in Time, an exhibition examining relationships between external physical environments and internal mind-spaces.
Artists:
Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka employs traditional Japanese papermaking and printing techniques to record shifting natural environments and our place within them. The works reflect water, as frozen and moving, presenting an opportunity to relate to geological time.
Naomi Lisiki’s paintings are at once representational and abstract; the viewers are looking simultaneously at the edge of a lush rainforest, their distant memory of it, and their emotions experienced then and now. Time appears as waves, rather than points on a line.
Will Maxen’s figures submerge in metaphorical landscapes, as if the psyche is connecting versions of itself. Paint itself becomes the unifying medium of personal histories, a harmonic table of frequencies which had fragmented over time.
Daniel Neumann’s 8-channel sound installation tunes sustained drones to subjective resonances (felt vibration) and the acoustic space of the gallery. The tones are carefully calibrated to produce beating, interference patterns, and microtonal shimmering in the air.
