About Event

Join us for a webinar on Wednesday August 26th to learn more about the jobs Waymo's driverless taxis seek to automate and the work they need to stay afloat.

Driverless Taxis are coming to Ontario. Waymo, an Alphabet-owned driverless taxi service based in the U.S. is lobbying Ontario and Toronto to deploy in our streets.

Come hear from Earla Phillips, a rideshare driver and advocate and Camila Justino, a data annotator, on how they perceive automation. Then join us for a discussion and a Q&A session from the moderator and the audience.

If you oppose Waymo coming to Ontario, sign our petition: https://techfordemocracy.ca/2026/04/29/say-no-to-waymo/

About the speakers:

Earla Phillips has 11 years of experience as a rideshare driver with Uber and Lyft since rideshare services launched in Canada. As an active labour advocate for nearly 10 years and with more than 4 years as Vice-President of the Rideshare Drivers Association of Ontario, her advocacy focuses on driver earnings, transparency, safety, working conditions, and platform accountability within the gig economy. Earla has participated in lobbying, policy discussions, media engagement, and grassroots organizing at municipal, provincial, and federal levels. In 2024, she received the Voices for Fairness Award from the Drivers Union in Seattle, becoming the first Canadian recipient.https://earlaphillips.substack.com

Camila works as a data annotator, a role often described as AI training. She is also a writer and researcher based in Toronto, with a background in literature, media, and women and gender studies. As a lifelong lover of language, she is passionate about LLMs, but more passionate about humanity. She hopes the perspectives of data annotators and other freelance contributors will be included in conversations about the future of human labour.
