HTN Fireside Chat with Duncan Greenberg: Machines of Healing Grace
What’s this about?
One question keeps coming up as clinical AI gets more capable: when does it actually get to see patients? Until recently, regulation looked like an insurmountable obstacle. Duncan Greenberg, Venture Partner at Oak HC/FT, thinks the regulatory environment has never been more dynamic and while change always happens slowly in healthcare we may be on the verge of some sudden leaps.
In his recent piece, “Machines of Healing Grace,” Duncan points to two signs:
The FDA’s August discussion paper, which proposes evaluating generative AI on competency, much the way human clinicians are vetted
A new ARPA-H program funding FDA-authorized clinical AI for cardiovascular care
Founders are already building for that world, and Duncan maps nine care delivery models taking shape. They range from an agentic front door for hospitals and VBC-in-a-box to AI-native EAPs, programmable clinics, and EHRs rebuilt as agent orchestrators.
We’re sitting down with Duncan to dig into his thesis: how fast regulation might actually move, which business models will win when clinical labor stops being the constraint, and who gets to certify that an AI is competent.
