About Event

We're excited to announce SAC Art Amsterdam's terrace-closing programme, JUGAAD: Absolute Improvisation, a fair for printed matter, handheld works, and a reading room.

Jugaad is more than a word. It's an act of being, doing and surviving that South Asians grow up with. Today, the word sits in the Oxford English Dictionary and is recognised far beyond its Punjabi and Sanskrit origins, naming an everyday intelligence of getting by and getting it done.

The programme traces how jugaadi thinking has travelled beyond South Asia, into other cultures, reflexes and languages, reimagining what it can mean and where it can go. It honours surprising and humorous instances of resourcefulness, adaptation and winging it.

United under the spirit of D-I-Y (do it yourself), the fair brings together newly received works carefully selected from an open call, alongside archives from both SAC Art Amsterdam and Mama Magnet, from 2020 to the present. Expect independent artist books, zines, posters and other small formats from many artists.

Come look, chit-chat, sip chai, and bring home printed mARTerials on improvisation and the DIY spirit, in the Oostelijke Havengebied this October. Reserve your timeslot above. Drop in anytime and stay as long as you like.
