Beyond Translation: Effective Multilingual LocalGov Drupal in Practice

​When Annertech brought LocalGov Drupal to Ireland, Irish language support wasn't optional – it is a legal requirement for public sector websites in Ireland. Whilst councils can save up to 80% on website costs through shared code and community with LocalGov Drupal, multilingual capabilities can still represent significant investment, and true internationalisation extends far beyond translating strings.

Building on our work with the LocalGov Multilingual module, we'll demonstrate how multilingual works in LocalGov Drupal for both council teams and citizens, showcase Drupal's strengths for internationalisation, and show how third-party services can assist where certified human translation is not an option.

As LocalGov Drupal now attracts global attention beyond the UK and Ireland, considerations for the project expand: varying legal requirements across jurisdictions; services consuming localised data sources; differing cultural expectations for content structure; and regions where standardised approaches may differ.
