Not Assimilated by Contemplation: A Symposium on the Argentine Avant-Garde of the 1960s brings together artists, scholars, and curators to examine the experimental practices, institutions, and international networks that shaped this transformative period. Organized by Dia Art Foundation and ISLAA, the symposium considers the connections between Buenos Aires and New York and revisits the enduring legacies of the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella, Rubén Santantonín, Marta Minujín, Liliana Porter, Luis Camnitzer, and the New York Graphic Workshop.
The afternoon program examines the international reach of the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella and the networks through which Argentine experimental art circulated during the 1960s.
Stuart Comer will discuss Marta Minujín’s Simultaneidad en simultaneidad; Aimé Iglesias Lukin will consider the Di Tella’s activities in the United States and the experiences of Argentine artists in New York; and Rosario Güiraldes will revisit New Art of Argentina, the influential 1964 exhibition jointly organized by the Walker Art Center and the Centro de Artes Visuales of the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella.
The symposium concludes with a conversation between Liliana Porter and Luis Camnitzer. Both artists exhibited at the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella and later co-founded the New York Graphic Workshop. Their conversation will revisit these intersecting histories in dialogue with ISLAA’s exhibition The New York Graphic Workshop: Towards Total Art.
