FDE Meetup: Recruiting & Retaining FDEs
Demand for FDEs has jumped roughly 10x in the last 18 months, and it's still the hardest role to hire for. The case-study round alone screens out about 60% of candidates, and plenty of good hires leave within a year or two. This session is about what actually works, from people who've built these teams.
What we'll cover:
Where FDEs come from, and build vs. buy. Palantir grows them from new-grad engineers; most AI-era teams hire from consulting and solutions engineering. Why hiring an engineer and teaching the customer side usually beats the reverse, and how to write the role so the right people apply.
The interview loop. The ambiguous case study that carries the most weight and the lowest pass rate, why stakeholder role-plays beat LeetCode for this role, and how to build a scorecard that weights customer judgment as much as technical depth.
Comp and retention. What FDEs actually earn in 2026 (roughly $215K median at Palantir up to $500K+ at the AI labs, mostly equity at the top), and how to keep them: defined rotations, a bench, and a succession plan before you need one.
We'll finish with a networking dinner.
