Bits & Bikes: Scaling Infrastructure in the Cloud and on the Streets
Infrastructure is more than just YAML files and Kubernetes clusters. It’s also thousands of physical stations and bike locks scattered across a city. While one world lives in the cloud and the other on the pavement, both require a strong focus on reliability.
Join Josh Paulin (Sr. Engineer, Observability Platform), Gabe Velasquez (Sr. Observability Architect, Grafana Labs), and Rob Ewaschuk (Principal Engineer, Lyft Urban Solutions) for a deep dive into the parallels and pitfalls of managing systems at scale.
What we’ll cover:
The Digital: Josh and Gabe will cover the evolution of a massive-scale metrics platform and the migration strategies used to modernize the stack. This talk focuses on how the Lyft team ensured the systems powering operations remained resilient while swapping the engine mid-flight.
The Physical: Rob will explore how we apply reliability engineering practices to "real-world" infrastructure like Bike Share Toronto. We’ll dive into the complexities of managing a fleet of heterogeneous, low-power IoT devices over cellular modems and the creative ways we’ve used engineering to reduce hardware theft and loss.
