19:45 - Causal machine learning and its applications in health data and beyond, by Judith Abecassis, Research Scientist @Inria
How can machine learning move beyond prediction to support individualized health decisions? This talk introduces causal machine learning for estimating the effect of an intervention from observational, retrospective data. Explainable AI gives the impression that we can identify which variables to tweak to obtain a desired outcome, but there is more to it. I will review how study design, epidemiological principles, and flexible machine-learning models can be combined to estimate more credible causal effects. Applications to health interventions will illustrate both the potential and the limitations of these methods. While my research is grounded in health, causal approaches of this kind are increasingly used across academia and industry in many other fields.
