6 Criteria for Ethical AI: How Nonprofits Can Lead with Values

AI isn't future tense anymore. Business adoption jumped from 55% in 2023 to nearly 80% in 2025, and social sector organizations are keeping pace. That opens a rare window: nonprofits can step into AI on purpose now, or let tools and standards be set by industries that don't share our mission, values or accountability to community.

In this Coffee Collective conversation, Kenzie Strong, VP, Impact + Innovation at ResultsLab, and Nick Blasi, Co-Founder of Personos, will walk through Ethical AI in the Social Sector: A Practical Call to Lead with Values. The position paper came out of ResultsLab's AI Learning Circle, where 18 social sector leaders from evaluation, data management, operations and service delivery worked on one question: What makes AI ethical and equitable in nonprofit practice?

The answer is ARISE: AI for Responsible Impact, Safety, and Equity. It's a values-first framework with six criteria that give you both a moral compass and a practical guide:

  1. Keep humanity at the center: use AI to cut admin burden so people have more time to listen, support and connect.

  2. Empower people through learning: build skill and confidence through safe, hands-on experimentation.

  3. Commit to long-term stewardship: track effectiveness, not just adoption, and keep community voice at the center.

  4. Steward data with integrity: protect privacy, minimize and anonymize data, and hold vendors to high standards.

  5. Be transparent and accountable: tell people when AI is used, how it's used, and give them a choice.

  6. Advance equity and access: widen access, test for bias, and let frontline staff and communities shape how AI is used.

We'll explore:

  • How to turn common AI fears into concrete guardrails your team can uphold

  • A practical roadmap: where to start, how to pick a low-risk first use, and how to build AI literacy

  • What funders can do right now to support responsible, equitable AI adoption

Bring your questions, your hesitations and your examples.
