Founders' Reading Club: Session 4
Book 4: The JOLT Effect – Matthew Dixon & Ted McKenna
The hardest deal to lose isn’t the one you lose to a competitor. It’s the one you lose to nothing. The customer agreed it was a problem, liked the solution, nodded through the demo, and then went quiet.
The JOLT Effect draws on an analysis of more than 2.5 million recorded sales conversations and finds that a huge share of deals stall at “no decision.” Most of those don’t stall because the buyer prefers the status quo. They stall because the buyer is afraid of making the wrong call. Most founders treat that as an objection to overcome, so they push harder, add more options, and send another case study. That makes it worse.
This book exists for one reason: to show you what top performers do when a customer is stuck. They don’t pitch harder. They figure out what’s really holding the buyer back, make a clear recommendation, stop the endless exploring, and take the risk off the table. That’s the difference between founders who close and founders whose pipeline is full of “let’s circle back next quarter.”

Around 240 pages, doable in a week if you make it a priority
What to expect:
A focused, founder-only discussion. It’s not a book report; we go straight to application
No pitches, no demos, no membership upsells
Limited to 10 founders, kept intentionally small so everyone can actually talk
One book a month, one virtual session a month going forward
General guidelines:
Read the book before the session. This isn’t a space to “catch up live”
Come with one real deal from your business that stalled or died to “no decision,” where the customer said yes to everything except actually buying. Alternatively, bring one where you now suspect you pushed harder when you should have made the decision easier
Camera on, genuinely present. This works because people show up for real
Confidentiality: what other founders share in the room stays in the room
This is a space for founders specifically; investors, vendors, and service providers aren’t the fit here
Before the session: Read the book. Bring a real stalled deal. Show up ready to talk, not perform. Looking forward to seeing all of you.
