About Event

The Nature Story Lab: Marine Mammal Edition

A one-day online workshop for marine mammal conservation practitioners, researchers, and students.

You may have years of observations, survey data, photographs, footage, or research behind your work. But when you need to reach a community, funder, policymaker, or the public, where do you begin?

Bring one real marine mammal project or communication challenge to The Nature Story Lab. We’ll start by identifying the audience you need to reach, what matters to them, and what you want them to understand or do. You’ll then shape a clear story and spend the second half of the workshop developing a practical output—such as a presentation, article, funding pitch, video concept, or social media story.

You’ll leave with a focused communications strategy, a draft output for your chosen audience, and feedback you can use to develop it further.

What we’ll do together

Hour 1 — Learn storytelling basics
After introductions, we’ll look at how storytelling works, what makes a story clear, relevant, and memorable, and how the audience, format, distribution channel, and call to action shape the story you tell.

— 15 mins break —

Hours 2–3 — Build your strategy and narrative
Choose the strongest angle, key messages, format, and channel for that audience. You’ll leave this part with a simple and effective communications plan.

— 40 mins break —

Hours 4–5 — Create
Work on an output you can take forward: an article, presentation, funding pitch, video concept, social media story, or another format that fits your project. Ask for support and feedback in real-time.

— 20 mins break —

Hour 6 — Present, get feedback, and plan your next step
Share your draft, receive practical feedback, and decide what you need to do to put it into use.

Bonus: You’ll receive a reusable story-planning worksheet for future field projects, research, and outreach opportunities. Also, connect with other SMM2026 attendees before the conference!

Workshop guarantee: If you leave without a clearer communications strategy and a draft you can develop further, email me within seven days for a full refund.
