About Event

Thanks for coming to our talk! Here are the (AI generated) meeting notes + transcript + recording: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fEfJcxfSRGccIo2vwemdYWiv5hQb4KUR2OGd4XH5CfE/edit?usp=sharing
Can machine learning help us build a fairer world? While algorithms are often criticised for reinforcing inequities, data science can also be a powerful force for advancing justice and improving healthcare.

Join us for a talk with Emma Pierson — Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Berkeley, AI2050 Fellow, and one of MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 — as she demonstrates how new data sources and methods can shed light on some of society’s most pressing challenges.

Emma will discuss her research on:

  • Accountability in Policing: using millions of dashcam images to detect disparities in police deployments.

  • Bias in Text and AI Systems: developing interpretable machine learning methods to uncover human and algorithmic biases.

  • Healthcare & Inequality: leveraging mobile health and clinical data to better understand disparities in access, outcomes, and care.

This talk is available for anyone, but for those in Cambridge, join us in Meridian (Directions) if you'd like to watch with others, and socialise afterwards. There will be free food afterwards! :)
