ISLAA Thursdays: Gonzalo Aguilar: Del informalismo al pop: el caso Charlie Squirru
In 1963, a prominent Argentine artist announced that pop had arrived in Argentina, pointing to Charlie Squirru's exhibition at Galería Bonino. Just months before, Squirru had been an informalist artist living in the United States, who had recently returned to Argentina to settle there and begin an artistic and romantic partnership with Dalila Puzzovio.
In this talk, ISLAA Senior Fellow Gonzalo Aguilar explores how that shift from informalism to pop came about, and what it revealed about Argentine culture of the period. Aguilar is Professor of Brazilian Literature at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Senior Researcher at CONICET, visiting professor at Stanford, Harvard, and the University of São Paulo, and curator of the 2025 exhibition Pop esotérico: Charlie Squirru at Rolf Art, Buenos Aires.
Before or after each program, explore the ISLAA Bookstore and its selection of publications on Latin American art and culture.
Guests may enjoy 50% off at the bookstore during Thursday’s talk and Saturday’s tour.
