meet the artist:
Tomarra Sankara-Kilombo's artistic journey is rooted in her cultural experiences, drawing inspiration from her upbringing in Northeast Ohio, and the rich tapestry of her Black American experience. Sankara-Kilombo works through the mediums of collage, poetry, and film to explore themes of spirituality, memory, morality, and inter-generational knowledge exchange. Influenced by luminaries like Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold, her work continues the tradition of storytelling through imagery while carving out her own distinct voice. Her greatest muse is her grandmother, Frankie, and familial ties to the Deep South, which infuse her work with authenticity and emotional depth. Through her curatorial practice she positions her pieces in dialogue with African-descendant ephemera and historical artifacts, enriching her artistic vision. Sankara-Kilombo’s work serves as a conduit through which she navigates the conception of black futures rooted in the enduring legacy of her ancestors. More than expression—it is an act of cultural preservation, celebration, and a call to ignite pride, curiosity, and love in her audience.
