RocketRide Office Hours: One Agent or many?

​Two weeks ago Cursor shipped a coordinator agent that delegates to thousands of subagents, and claimed 6x more pull requests merged. Anthropic measured multi-agent 90.2% better. Cognition published a post called “Don’t Build Multi-Agent Systems.”

​They’re all right, and the reason is more useful than the argument: splitting the looking works, splitting the deciding doesn’t. Everyone converged on the same shape — one agent holds the context, short-lived subagents go and find things, each returns a single summary and is thrown away.

​What nobody settled:

​Were the wins ever real? At equal token budgets, single-agent matches or beats multi-agent. So a 6x claim might be architecture, or might just be a bigger bill.

​What goes in that summary? It’s where the quality is lost, and there’s no agreed answer.

​We’ll also make the unpopular argument that most systems shouldn’t split at all, cover the one case where you split for a completely different reason — because the data must not mix — and show a real eight-agent pipeline where per-node tracing tells you what each one actually cost.
