Tethics & Chill: Do Chatbots Dream of Bioweapons?
In the 1990s, a doomsday cult sprayed Tokyo with what they thought was weaponized anthrax. No one was harmed, but only because they fudged the formula.
In the early 2000s, al Qaeda tried to develop anthrax in a hospital lab and failed for a similar reason: lack of expertise.
In 2021, AlphaFold solved the 3D structure of nearly every known protein, compressing what would have taken thousands of PhDs decades of focused research into about a year of work.
Today, over half of the world has instant access to advanced AI models at their fingertips...which is pretty great!
But it does have us wondering:
How long can public safety squeak by on the fading illusion that building a successful bioweapon requires specialized knowledge and scarce equipment?
Never to be outdone by doom and gloom, please join the Tethics & Chill team for our second installment of pretty chill conversations about the tethics of biosecurity, with our experts:
Sunishchal Dev, one of the RAND researchers behind the most comprehensive public evaluation of AI’s biology and chemistry knowledge to date.
Igor Kurganov, former high-stakes poker pro turned effective altruist, investor, and philanthropist in AI safety and existential risk.
And our gracious host:
William Fitzgerald, managing director of Bárd Global and a serial entrepreneur passionate about privacy and the intersection of human computational intelligence.
