Mountain Lions in San Diego: Wildlife, Habitat and a Changing Climate

​Mountain lions still move through Mission Trails Regional Park, just miles from the center of San Diego. Their presence is a reminder of what’s at stake as our region grows, warms and changes.

​Join the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation and local wildlife and conservation experts for an evening about mountain lions, protected habitat and what it takes to keep native wildlife on the landscape in a major city.

​Using Mission Trails as a local case study, we’ll explore how more than 8,000 acres of protected open space provide habitat for mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, mule deer and other native species, and how habitat restoration, invasive-species management, wildfire-prevention work and long-term land protection can help wildlife adapt to increasing heat, drought and other environmental pressures.

​We’ll also look at the partnerships behind that work, including the City of San Diego, park rangers, scientists, nonprofit partners, volunteers, donors and community members. In keeping with San Diego Climate Week’s 2026 theme of Unity, the conversation will focus on the shared responsibility of protecting natural spaces for wildlife and people alike.

​This free public event is hosted by the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, the nonprofit partner that supports the preservation, protection and enhancement of City-owned Mission Trails Regional Park.
